Luxurious Living in Johannesburg, South Africa: House Tat in Bassonia

Luxurious Living in Johannesburg, South Africa: House Tat in Bassonia

When arriving at House Tat, the visitor can immediately understand the size of this project byNico Van Der Meulen Architects, for the five storey house was redesigned into a contemporary home. The building is located on a very steep and narrow site with 180° views to the east, which allowed the architectural design to take advantage of the spectacular views, but acted as a challenge when the architects wanted to add habitable space. The architect, Rudolph van der Meulen explains that the teams had to work on an existing structure and creativity allowed them to redesign the existing space making the most of natural light and the stunning views.

The contemporary makeover was given to the entire building: from the street to the east façade one can enjoy the modern feel thanks to the use of concrete, steel and glass. Public and private space have been vertically divided, with the entry level being the most public with an entertainment area that opens up to a covered balcony, a study, a bar-lounge as well as a meeting room for business visitors. With limited garden space, the various balconies and the large covered terrace floating above the raised pool deck encourage outdoor life while taking full advantage of the magnificent views. Glass House by Nico Van Der Meulen Architects in Johannesburg South Africa

Yet Another Glamourous Architecture Display in South Africa: Glass House

Glass House is an imposing residence designed by studio Nico Van Der Meulen Architects and located in Johannesburg, South Africa. The owners wanted a glamorous home, filled with light and strongly connected to its environment. With a total floor area of 2500 square meters, the residence meets its requests. According to the architects, “the shape on the south side is a half circle, forming a horseshoe on the north side. The porte cochere is a suspended glass and stainless steel structure, with view into the house and a stainless steel and glass staircase, suspended over a heated pond, (which in summer acts as a temperature stabilizer, and in winter as a giant heater) with a circular, raised glass water feature in the background, framed by a beam two storeys high”. The interiors of the Glass House are highly modern, with details that dazzle the mind. Have a look and tell us what you find most intriguing.

Imposing Modern Residence in South Africa: House Serengeti

Imposing Modern Residence in South Africa: House Serengeti

Nico Van Der Meulen Architects completed an imposing residence in Johannesburg, South Africa, entitled House Serengeti. The residence impresses due to an unusual mix of earthly textures and raw materials with high-gloss finishes and refined design elements. According to the architects, the brief “was to create a stylish family home with ecologically sound design that maximized indoor-outdoor living to take full advantage of Johannesburg’s legendary eight-month summer. It’s a double-storey home with an open-plan living area downstairs, an upstairs pajama lounge, a study, and four bedrooms, all of them en-suite. The three family bedrooms are upstairs, and we positioned the guest room downstairs, separating it from the family’s sleeping area to maximize privacy”. Visual treats can be observed throughout the interiors of this residence, from the sculptures created by van der Meulen’s brother, Regardt, to the bold pendant lights above the dining room.
